My young Slovenian friend Helena Crcek was travelling around Kenya and on her way home to Slovenia she planned to stop off in Egypt for a week and asked if I wanted to join her. Helena is a tour guide and takes escorted tours around Egypt and many other places and of course I said YES. You can find out more about Helena by looking at her web site at http://mysite.freeserve.com/bighug
Helena met me at Cairo Airport, one of her friends managed to pass me through some of the formalities at the airport but it was still after 1:00 AM before we arrived at the Nile Hilton Hotel. Next day Helena picked me up at about 10:00AM with a minibus, official guide and driver and we visited the Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza. In Cairo we visited the Cairo Museum, saw King Tut's relics and a lot of mummies and interesting artefacts, visited the main market place, went on a a Nile dinner cruise, learned the rudiments of belly dancing and visited a hundred other interesting places. Next day we got a night sleeper train down to Luxor and were met at about 5 00 AM in the morning by another of Helena's Egyptian friends who had organised a taxi to take us to our hotel. In Luxor we visited many temples and tombs, sailed in a felucca, saw a sound and light show, learned how to ride a camel and enjoyed 3 days of glorious sunshine, it was just too short, We got the night sleeper train back to Cairo, visited some famous mosques, got married and then I wore my kilt and we went to the main market area again, caused a big fuss. On our last day in Cairo we met lots of friends of Helena, including a lovely Slovenian nun and in the evening went out for a drink with more of Helena's friends, finished up in the rotating restaurant at the top of the Hotel Meridien for a breathtaking last view of Cairo and the Nile, the perfect ending for a perfect holiday and all thanks to Helena.
